A good typing speed for most people is around 40 words per minute, the figure usually quoted as the adult average. Above 60 to 70 words per minute counts as fast, and 80 or more is professional level, the range expected of transcriptionists and data entry staff. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: 50 wpm at 98 percent accuracy beats 70 wpm at 90 percent.
The reason accuracy wins is arithmetic. Every mistake costs you the keystroke that made it, the backspace, and the retype, so three errors in a sentence can wipe out the gain from typing ten percent faster. Most people who feel stuck at a number are not typing too slowly, they are correcting too often.
This test uses the standard convention where five characters count as one word, including spaces, so the score is comparable with other typing tests rather than being inflated by short words. Accuracy is measured against the sample text character by character as you go.
Use the first table to place your current score, and the second to work out what your target should be. Most people overestimate the speed their work actually needs and underestimate the accuracy it needs.

These ranges are common industry guidance rather than a formal standard. Employers who test typing publish their own thresholds, so check the job advert before assuming a number.
Learn touch typing first. Rest your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL semicolon), give every key to one specific finger, and stop looking down even though it feels slower for the first week. Then practise in short daily sessions of ten to fifteen minutes, holding accuracy above 95 percent, and only push the pace once the errors have dropped.
Speed comes from removing pauses, not from moving your fingers faster. Watch where you stall: usually the number row, capitals reached with the wrong shift key, punctuation, and the letters under your weaker fingers. Drill those specific keys rather than typing another random paragraph, which mostly rehearses what you can already do.
Practise on real sentences rather than word lists. Real text trains the letter pairs and rhythms you actually type at work, and it keeps your eyes reading ahead, which is the habit that separates a 70 wpm typist from a 40 wpm one. Words per minute is not a count of the words you can see. Every five characters you type, spaces included, count as one word, which is why a passage of short common words and a passage of long technical terms score the same for the same amount of finger movement. Without that convention a test full of three letter words would flatter you and a test full of medical vocabulary would punish you, and no two results would be comparable.
There are two figures in circulation and it is worth knowing which one you are being shown. Gross words per minute counts everything you typed and ignores whether it was right. Net words per minute subtracts a penalty for errors, which is the number employers care about because uncorrected text has to be fixed by somebody. This test reports speed alongside accuracy so you can see both halves rather than a single flattering figure.
Test length changes the result too, and shorter is usually kinder. Fifteen seconds rewards a burst of concentration, sixty seconds exposes the point where your rhythm breaks and your error rate climbs. If you want a number that predicts a full working day, use the sixty second test and take the lower score seriously rather than retrying until you get a good one.
Most people plateau for physical reasons before they plateau for skill reasons. If your wrists rest on the desk edge, your fingers have to stretch rather than drop onto the keys, and the movement gets slower and more painful the longer you type. Keep forearms roughly level with the keyboard, wrists floating rather than anchored, elbows at about a right angle, and both feet down so your torso is not doing balancing work while your hands try to be precise.
The keyboard itself matters less than the internet suggests, with two exceptions. Key travel that is very long or very stiff will cap your speed no matter how good your technique, and a layout you are unfamiliar with will cost you a week of accuracy every time you switch. Pick one keyboard, learn where its punctuation and modifier keys are, and stay on it. Screen height is the other quiet limiter: if the text sits too low, your eyes drop toward the keyboard and touch typing quietly turns back into looking.
Take the pauses seriously as well. Fifteen minutes of focused practice with a short break beats an hour of grinding, both for learning and for your hands. Sustained typing at high speed is a repetitive activity, and the discomfort that shows up in your wrists or forearms is information, not weakness. Stop, stretch the fingers backwards gently, and come back to it.
Typing tests still appear in hiring, but for a narrower set of roles than most candidates fear. Data entry, transcription, captioning, medical and legal administration, and high volume customer support chat are the places where speed genuinely changes output, and those are the roles where you should expect a measured test rather than a self reported figure. Employers in these areas normally publish a threshold in the advert, often somewhere between 45 and 80 words per minute, and pair it with an accuracy floor around 95 to 98 percent.
For engineering, analysis, design, and management roles, nobody is going to test your typing. Thinking is the bottleneck in that work, not keystrokes. Slow typing still has a cost, though, and it shows up in places you might not connect to a keyboard: pair programming where the other person waits, incident channels where a fast written summary calms everyone down, and written interview rounds where a take home answer has to be composed under time pressure.
If a test is coming, prepare the way you would for any other assessment. Practise on prose rather than word lists, because the assessment will use sentences. Do a run at the length the employer specifies rather than the length you enjoy. Type the first line slowly and deliberately to set a rhythm, and resist the urge to chase a personal best, because in a scored test one accurate pass beats three fast messy ones.
