NVIDIA Engineering Levels and Salary: Pay by Discipline, by Site, and Why Reported Figures Understate It

Every published NVIDIA salary figure, including the ones on this page, describes what a stock grant was worth on the day it was awarded. For anyone hired before roughly 2025 that number bears little relationship to what they actually realised, because the share price moved so far underneath them. This guide starts with that distinction, then breaks engineering pay down by level, by discipline from CUDA to physical design, and by office across fourteen sites worldwide.

Read this before the numbers

Grant value versus what you realise

Compensation tables quote grant value: what a stock award was worth on the day it was granted. For most employers that is a reasonable approximation of what the employee eventually receives, because share prices drift rather than transform.

NVIDIA broke that assumption. The share price moved so far over the past few years that engineers hired before roughly 2025 have realised sums that bear little relationship to the number attached to their level. Two things follow, and both matter more than any individual figure further down this page.

Published figures understate long tenured engineers

When an engineer tells you what they earn at NVIDIA and it sounds implausible against the reported band for their level, both of you are probably right. They are describing realised value and the table is describing grant value.

That advantage is not available to new joiners

A grant priced today is priced today. Anyone joining now should evaluate the offer on grant value alone and treat past appreciation as history rather than as a forecast attached to their own package.

The bonus collapsing is worth pausing on, because it makes NVIDIA offers look weaker than they are against companies with a strong cash bonus culture. From IC3 upward there is effectively no annual bonus at all, and the money that would have been there is in the stock grant instead. Comparing base plus bonus across two employers will systematically undervalue the NVIDIA side.

The steepest step is IC6 to IC7, roughly a sixty per cent increase. The largest step you can realistically plan for is IC4 to IC5, which adds close to $140k and is achievable in a way that Distinguished Engineer is not.

The gap nobody publishes

NVIDIA engineering is not one job. An IC3 writing inference kernels and an IC3 doing physical design hold the same level, are held to comparable scope expectations, and are not paid the same. The spread across disciplines at a single level is wider than two full promotions in some cases.

Discipline level medians are not reliably published, so the column below expresses position against the baseline for your site and level rather than inventing precision that the data cannot support. The direction and rough magnitude are consistent across reported offers.

The uncomfortable finding is at the bottom of the table. RTL design, verification, and physical design all pay below the software baseline at the same level, at a company whose entire business is silicon. This is not a judgement about difficulty or importance, and it is not specific to NVIDIA. Silicon engineers are benchmarked against a semiconductor market that has not been repriced by the AI boom, while software engineers with accelerated computing experience are being bid for by every AI lab and hyperscaler simultaneously.

The practical implication for anyone early in their career and genuinely undecided is clear enough from the table. For anyone already established in silicon work, the more useful reading is that internal mobility toward compute and AI infrastructure teams is worth understanding as a compensation lever, not just a career one.

One caveat on the premium disciplines. The bidding for CUDA and inference engineers reflects present conditions rather than a permanent structural fact. The premium is real today and it was not there a decade ago.

Pay by office worldwide

NVIDIA lists more than fifty offices. The ones below are the sites with meaningful engineering populations, which is a much shorter list. Santa Clara remains the largest by a wide margin and Israel is second, a position it reached through the Mellanox acquisition rather than organic growth.

Two things are worth drawing out. Israel pays closest to United States levels of any location, which reflects a local market where NVIDIA competes against the same employers it faces in Santa Clara rather than against a cheaper regional benchmark. And the American spread is narrower than at most large technology employers: Durham and Austin sit only fifteen to twenty per cent below Santa Clara at the same level, where the equivalent gap elsewhere is often larger.

The equity share of the package is generally lower outside the United States, which matters more at NVIDIA than it would elsewhere. It means non American engineers participated less in the share price appreciation described earlier, even at the same nominal level.

The awkward part

Why two engineers at one level differ

At most companies the largest pay variation within a level comes from performance. At NVIDIA over the past few years it has come from when you were hired, and the effect is large enough that it changes how the whole system behaves.

This produces management problems that NVIDIA deals with constantly and that candidates rarely hear about. A refresher grant that would delight a recent joiner can look negligible to a colleague with years of appreciated stock still vesting, which makes the standard retention tool much weaker on exactly the people the company most wants to keep. Some long tenured engineers are, in practical terms, no longer working for the money.

For someone evaluating an offer now, the useful conclusion is not to benchmark yourself against those colleagues. Their outcome came from a share price movement, not from a compensation policy that will be applied to you. Judge the offer on grant value and on whether the work is what you want to be doing.

IC1

Software Engineer

The first year is mostly absorbing a domain that graduates do not arrive knowing. Whether you land on drivers, CUDA libraries, or verification, the common thread is that performance is a correctness requirement rather than a nice to have, and reasoning about it takes time to develop.

Software Engineer II

An IC2 is trusted with a module end to end and is expected to explain a throughput regression rather than escalate it. This is the level where engineers stop treating the GPU as a black box and start having opinions about occupancy, memory bandwidth, and where the time is actually going.

IC3

Senior Engineer

IC3 owns a subsystem and the design decisions inside it. At NVIDIA this almost always means holding a defensible position on a hardware and software tradeoff, because a design that ignores the silicon it runs on does not survive review. This is also the most populated level and the one with the most reported compensation data.

An IC5 makes decisions whose consequences arrive years later, which at NVIDIA is unusually literal. Architectural choices have to anticipate hardware that does not exist yet, and reversing them once silicon has taped out is not an option. The compensation step into this level is the largest below the very top.

The move from IC6 to IC7 is roughly a sixty per cent increase in reported median compensation, the largest jump anywhere on the ladder. It reflects extreme scarcity and packages that are individually negotiated rather than drawn from a band. Contributions typically include patents, publications, and architectures the wider industry builds on.

Negotiating an NVIDIA engineering offer

The levers below are roughly ordered by how much they are worth. The first one accounts for most of the difference between a good outcome and an average one.

Negotiate the grant, not the base

Base salary sits inside a controlled band for your level and location and has limited give. The stock grant carries genuine discretion, and at IC3 and above it is the larger part of the package anyway. This is where the money is.

Your discipline is a legitimate argument

If you are joining a CUDA, compiler, or AI inference team, you are in the part of the market NVIDIA is competing hardest for. Saying so plainly, with a competing offer behind it, is a stronger position than a generic seniority argument.

Evaluate the offer as if the share price holds flat

The appreciation that defined earlier cohorts is not a promise to you. Model the package at today's price and ask whether you would accept it on those terms. If the answer depends on the stock repeating its recent run, you are not evaluating an offer, you are taking a position.

Count the stock purchase plan

The fifteen per cent discount with a lookback across a roughly twenty four month offering period is a real component of compensation and most candidates leave it out of comparisons entirely. It is bounded by the statutory contribution limit, but it is not trivial.

Get the IC number in writing

A Senior Engineer title at NVIDIA can map to IC3 or IC4 depending on the organisation, and the median gap between them is close to sixty thousand dollars. Ask for the number before you negotiate anything else.

These come up most often from engineers weighing an NVIDIA offer and from people already inside trying to work out where they sit.

Why do reported NVIDIA salaries look lower than what engineers say they earn?

Because reported figures use grant value, meaning what the stock was worth on the day it was awarded, and NVIDIA's share price has appreciated so sharply that realised value has run well ahead of it for anyone hired before about 2025.

The gap is not small. An engineer whose four year grant was priced several years ago may be realising a multiple of the number attached to their level. That distorts every published NVIDIA salary table, including this one, and it is the single most important caveat to hold in mind when reading any of them.

Which NVIDIA engineering specialisation pays the most?

AI frameworks and inference work sits at the top, followed closely by CUDA and compute library engineering. Both carry a meaningful premium over the site baseline because the pool of people who can do them well is tiny and every AI lab and hyperscaler is bidding for the same names.

Compiler and toolchain work sits just behind. Does NVIDIA have engineering offices in China?

Yes. NVIDIA lists offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, and maintains engineering presence in mainland China. This is a genuine difference from Google, which withdrew from mainland China and has no engineering there.

It matters if you are comparing offers across the two, because a China based NVIDIA engineering role is a real thing in a way that a China based Google engineering role is not.

Which is the largest NVIDIA engineering site after headquarters?

Israel, by a considerable margin. NVIDIA's presence there expanded enormously through the Mellanox acquisition and now spans Yokneam, Tel Aviv, Raanana, Beer Sheva, and Tel Hai, with networking as the historical core.

Israeli compensation is also the closest to United States levels of any NVIDIA location outside America, which reflects a local market where NVIDIA competes with the same companies it competes with in Santa Clara.

How much of an NVIDIA engineering package is stock?

It rises steeply with level. At IC1 stock is under ten per cent of the package and base salary is almost the whole thing. By IC3 stock is around a third. By IC5 it is roughly half, and above that it dominates.

The bonus goes the other way and effectively vanishes. Reported bonuses at IC1 and IC2 are small but real, and from IC3 upward they fall close to zero as the money moves entirely into equity.

Why do two engineers at the same NVIDIA level earn very different amounts?

Hire date, more than performance. Two IC3 engineers doing identical work can be realising very different sums purely because one was granted stock at a much lower share price than the other.

This creates awkward dynamics that NVIDIA managers deal with constantly. Long tenured engineers can be difficult to motivate with a refresher that looks small against what is already vesting, while recent joiners see a package that behaves like a normal technology employer. Is NVIDIA engineering pay competitive with Google and Meta?

On grant value it is broadly comparable at most levels and stronger at the very top, where the IC7 median exceeds one million dollars.

On realised value over the past few years it has been substantially ahead, though that is a statement about the share price rather than about NVIDIA's pay policy. Anyone joining now is being granted at a much higher price than earlier cohorts, so the historical outperformance should not be treated as a forecast.

Do NVIDIA engineers still write code at senior levels?

Yes, more than at many comparable companies, but the volume drops and the nature changes. An IC5 or IC6 is more likely to write the prototype that settles an argument about whether an approach works than to own ongoing feature delivery.

The domain helps here. Performance work rewards people who can still get their hands into a profiler, so NVIDIA senior engineers tend to retain deeper practical involvement than the equivalent level at a pure software company.

How important is CUDA experience for getting hired?

For compute, AI infrastructure, and library teams it is close to decisive, and it is the clearest single differentiator in a candidate pool. For driver, graphics, networking, and silicon roles it is useful context rather than a requirement.

If you do not have it and want those teams, demonstrable low level performance work in any context is the next best signal. What interviewers are testing is whether you reason about memory hierarchies and parallel execution instinctively, and that can be shown without a CUDA project on your resume.

Can I move from a hardware team to a software team at NVIDIA?

Internal mobility is supported and moves in both directions happen regularly. Given the pay gap documented on this page, hardware to software is the more commonly attempted direction.

It is not automatic. A move usually needs a manager willing to take the ramp cost and evidence that you have been building the relevant skills before you asked. Engineers who make the move successfully have generally been contributing to software adjacent work for a while first.
