Software Engineer

The first year is mostly absorbing a domain that graduates do not arrive knowing. Whether you land on drivers, CUDA libraries, or verification, the common thread is that performance is a correctness requirement rather than a nice to have, and reasoning about it takes time to develop.

- Learning the profiling tools before learning the codebase

IC2
Software Engineer II
2 to 4 years$248kOwning a module, and owning its performance numbers.
An IC2 is trusted with a module end to end and is expected to explain a throughput regression rather than escalate it. This is the level where engineers stop treating the GPU as a black box and start having opinions about occupancy, memory bandwidth, and where the time is actually going.

- Debugging across the boundary between software and hardware
- Contributing to design discussions rather than only implementing
IC3
Senior Engineer

IC3 owns a subsystem and the design decisions inside it. At NVIDIA this almost always means holding a defensible position on a hardware and software tradeoff, because a design that ignores the silicon it runs on does not survive review. This is also the most populated level and the one with the most reported compensation data.

IC4
Staff Engineer

The distinguishing work at IC4 is aligning teams whose constraints genuinely conflict, most often software teams working on a quarterly cadence and hardware teams working on a multi year one. Very little of this appears on an assigned roadmap, which is precisely why it earns the level.

IC5
Senior Staff Engineer
10 to 15 years$514kStrategy for an engineering area, on a silicon rather than software horizon.
An IC5 makes decisions whose consequences arrive years later, which at NVIDIA is unusually literal. Architectural choices have to anticipate hardware that does not exist yet, and reversing them once silicon has taped out is not an option. The compensation step into this level is the largest below the very top.

IC6
Principal Engineer
15 plus years$608kCompany wide platform influence across organisations.
Principal Engineers are usually closely identified with a specific architecture, platform, or domain that they effectively defined. The authority comes from credibility rather than reporting lines, and much of the job is arbitrating between organisations whose disagreements are expensive.

IC7
Distinguished Engineer
20 plus years$1.02MIndustry standing, and by far the steepest compensation step on the ladder.
The move from IC6 to IC7 is roughly a sixty per cent increase in reported median compensation, the largest jump anywhere on the ladder. It reflects extreme scarcity and packages that are individually negotiated rather than drawn from a band. Contributions typically include patents, publications, and architectures the wider industry builds on.
