Apple Engineering Levels and Salary: The ICT Ladder, and Why the Title Tells You Nothing
Apple is the least transparent of the large technology employers about levels, and it is the only one where you genuinely cannot infer seniority from a job title. An ICT3 and an ICT6 will both tell you they are a software engineer at Apple, with roughly $550k separating them. Why nobody at Apple has a real title
Every large technology employer keeps its level numbers internal. Apple goes further: it also declines to attach public titles to most of them. ICT4 is Senior Software Engineer, and above that the titles simply run out. There is no widely used public name for ICT5 or ICT6 at all.
The result is that Apple engineers three levels apart describe their jobs in identical words. This is not a quirk to note in passing. It is the single biggest practical obstacle to understanding an Apple offer.
Ask for the ICT number directly
Recruiters will give it if asked plainly, and there is nothing awkward about asking. What you cannot do is infer it, because the job title on the posting and on your eventual offer letter will very likely just say Software Engineer.
The posted salary range is the strongest clue
Apple job postings in several American states carry legally required base salary ranges. Compare the posted range against the base figures in the pay table below and you can usually place the role within one level.
Do not read seniority into the title
Senior Software Engineer maps to ICT4, but ICT5 and ICT6 have no widely used public title at all. An engineer three levels apart from you may describe their job in exactly the same words you would use for yours.
Team matters more than at most companies
Apple's secrecy means teams operate with unusual independence, and compensation, interview style, and even the level you are pitched for vary between organisations. Two offers at the same nominal level can look quite different.

ICT1 is not shown because it is effectively unused for engineers. The ladder begins at ICT2 for new graduates, which is why an Apple entry level offer carries a number that looks one step up from where you might expect it to start.

Reported medians for the United States. Component splits are published up to ICT5; ICT6 components are averages from the same dataset, and Distinguished Engineer has a reported total with no public breakdown.
The final column is the one worth studying, because it changes the character of the package completely as you climb.

Two features stand out. The first is that the senior steps are enormous: ICT4 to ICT5 adds around $147k, ICT5 to ICT6 adds around $307k, and ICT6 to Distinguished Engineer is close to a doubling. These are among the steepest senior increments on any large technology ladder, and they sit behind promotions that very few people get.
The second is the stock share. At ICT2 an Apple package is essentially a salary with a small equity component attached. By ICT6 it is majority equity with a salary attached. That is not a difference of degree, it changes what you are actually being paid in, and it means a flat share price year affects junior and senior engineers in completely different ways.

How Apple equity actually works
Apple's vesting schedule is genuinely different from its peers, and the difference has practical consequences for when you join, when you leave, and what you should ask for.
Vesting lands twice a year, in April and October
Apple stock vests on a semi annual schedule rather than the quarterly or monthly cadence used at most large technology employers. Two dates a year carry your entire equity income, which makes the timing of a resignation unusually consequential.
Leaving between vest dates is expensive
Because the gaps are six months rather than three, walking away shortly before a vest forfeits a larger single block than it would elsewhere. Recruiters at competing companies know this, and a sign on bonus sized to bridge it is a normal thing to ask for.
Refreshers are the real growth mechanism
Initial grants are only part of the picture. Annual refresher grants stack on top of each other, so an engineer several years into a level has multiple overlapping grants vesting at once and realises more than a fresh hire at the same level would be offered.
The stock purchase plan is worth counting
Apple runs an employee stock purchase plan with a discount and a lookback, and most candidates leave it out of offer comparisons entirely. It is bounded by the statutory contribution limit but it is not trivial money.
Equity share rises steeply with level
Stock is about fifteen per cent of the package at ICT2 and over half of it by ICT6. The consequence is that senior Apple compensation is far more exposed to the share price than junior compensation, and a flat year affects the two groups very differently.

Apple engineering spans custom silicon, operating systems, services, machine learning, and product applications. The spread in pay across those areas is narrower than you might expect, and one part of it runs directly against the industry pattern.
Positioning below is expressed against the baseline for your level rather than as precise medians, because discipline level samples are too small to support precision.

Engineering sites outside Cupertino
Cupertino dominates, but Apple engineering is more distributed than its reputation suggests, and several of the largest sites outside America are silicon centres rather than software ones.

Israel is the one most people underestimate. Apple built a substantial silicon presence there through acquisition and it is now among the largest engineering populations outside the United States, centred on Herzliya and Haifa. Munich plays a similar role in Europe, focused on power management and wireless design.
Compensation outside the United States is materially lower at the same level, and the equity share of the package is generally smaller too. Why does everyone at Apple have the same job title?

Write for scope, since the title will not carry it
